Short answer: a church group can visit all seven cities named in Revelation 2 and 3 on a private Christian tour of western Turkey: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. Many groups add the island of Patmos, where John received the Revelation. Mission Travel Faith Tours builds Seven Churches itineraries for churches, pastors, and Bible study groups, with licensed English-speaking guides, private transportation, and on-call support from arrival to departure.

Most of us have read the seven letters many times. Fewer of us have stood in the theater at Ephesus or looked at the water channels of Laodicea and heard Jesus say, "you are neither cold nor hot." The letters were written to real congregations in real cities, and the ground explains a lot of what the text assumes. When a church walks those cities together, Revelation stops being only a book about the end and becomes a word to the church right now.

What a Seven Churches church tour usually covers

  • Ephesus: the ancient city, the Great Theater from Acts 19, and the Basilica of St. John. This is the church that was told to return to its first love (Revelation 2:1-7).
  • Smyrna (Izmir): the church that suffered and was told to be faithful unto death (Revelation 2:8-11).
  • Pergamum (Bergama): the acropolis and the setting for "where Satan's throne is" (Revelation 2:12-17).
  • Thyatira, Sardis, and Philadelphia: smaller sites that carry three very different letters: tolerating false teaching, a reputation for being alive, and an open door no one can shut.
  • Laodicea: one of the most active excavations in Turkey, and the lukewarm letter that still lands hard on comfortable churches (Revelation 3:14-22).
  • Patmos: the Greek island where John was exiled and wrote what he saw (Revelation 1:9). Many groups also include the area where Philip the Evangelist is remembered.

Three ways churches usually shape the trip

  1. Seven Churches core (about 6 days): Istanbul plus the seven cities. Best for groups with limited vacation time.
  2. Seven Churches with Patmos (about 8 days): the full Revelation route with a day on Patmos. This is the most common choice for a church Bible study group.
  3. Seven Churches with Cappadocia, Patmos, and Rome: a longer journey that connects the churches of Asia with early Christian history in Cappadocia and Rome.

Questions pastors ask before announcing a Seven Churches trip

Is a Seven Churches tour a good fit for a church that has already been to Israel?

Yes. Israel shows where the gospel began. Turkey shows where it went next and what happened to the first congregations. It is a natural second trip, and a good fit for a church that is teaching through Revelation or Acts.

How big does our group need to be?

Private custom Christian group tours run from about 10 travelers up to large church groups. For every 20 paid travelers, one spot is free, and groups of 20 or more travel with a tour manager. Ask for pricing at your real headcount, not a best-case number.

How much walking is involved?

Plan on a moderate activity level. Ephesus, Pergamum, and Laodicea mean uneven stone and some climbing. Tell us early if you have travelers who need a slower pace, and we will build in rest and shorter site days.

Who teaches at each site?

Licensed local guides handle history and archaeology. Your pastor or group leader carries the biblical teaching. A simple plan works well: read the letter to each church on location, then give the group one question to talk about on the bus.

What is usually not included?

International airfare, tips, travel insurance, and personal spending are often outside the land price. Get a one-page inclusions list in writing before anyone pays a deposit.

A simple planning timeline

  • 12 to 18 months out: pick the route, season, and trip leader, and get a written outline.
  • 9 to 12 months out: announce to the church, open registration, and collect deposits.
  • 3 to 6 months out: confirm passports, teach a short series on Revelation 1 to 3, and set the room list.
  • The final month: hold the pre-trip meeting and share the packing list, devotional plan, and emergency contacts.
